Flayed to the Bone
CatastrophicThe steer hit the end of the rope with all twelve hundred pounds behind it and the line ran through your closed fist like a saw through green wood. It took the skin, then the flesh, then it smoked against the bone. Your palm is opened in a single screaming stripe, three fingers flayed white, the cords that bend them cooked in their beds. The doctor scrubs it with carbolic by lamplight and says it plain: the fingers may not be worth saving, and mortification will not wait on your feelings about it.
- Right hand bound in oiled lint and carried in a sling, no use of it whatsoever for 14 days
- Laudanum haze: slowed speech and unsteady judgment for 3 days
- One-handed at everything, mounting, eating, buttons, and another soul must saddle your horse
- /me cradles the swaddled right hand against the chest, breath hissing through clenched teeth
Recovery Months, if the fingers keep. The palm scars thick as harness leather and the grip returns partway or not at all.·Doctor, urgently
2
The Horn Takes the Thumb
SevereYou went to slip the dally and the rope beat you to it, snapping tight with your thumb inside the wrap. Horn, rope, and the steer's whole weight met on that one joint. The thumb is crushed flat at the base and part-torn, hanging on by hide and stubbornness, while the rope burned a channel across your palm on its way out. The doctor sets what can be set, splints it to a wooden stay, and speaks quietly about how many one-thumbed ropers he has known.
- Right thumb splinted rigid to a wooden stay, palm wrapped: no gripping, roping, or shooting with the right hand for 12 days
- Buttons, cinches, and card shuffling are beyond you: ask for help or go without
- Fever watch for 3 nights, any blackening past the nail means the doctor at a run
- /me holds the splinted thumb stiff and away from the body like it belongs to someone else
Recovery Three to six weeks splinted. If it mortifies the thumb comes off; if it keeps, it never quite bends the same.·Doctor, urgently

Cooked Through
SevereNo glove, no mercy. The rope ran the full length of your palm under load and burned through every layer skin owns and some it borrowed. What is left is a trench of cooked flesh from the heel of the hand to the base of the fingers, weeping and gray at the edges. The doctor trims away the dead parts with scissors, packs the trench with lint and salve, and tells you the burn is the small worry: it is the rot that follows a dirty rope he means to outrun.
- Right hand packed and bound: no gripping, lifting, or reins in that hand for 10 days
- Dressings changed daily with carbolic wash, and you will smell it coming
- Fever watch for 3 nights: any red streaking up the wrist means the doctor, immediately
- /me flexes the fingertips above the thick bandage, testing what still answers
Recovery Two to four weeks. The palm scars in a hard rope-wide band you will carry to the grave.·Doctor required

Wrist in the Coils
SevereThe slack jumped and a loose coil snatched your wrist as the steer hit the end. For one long heartbeat the rope owned your whole arm, burning a full ring around the wrist and wrenching the joint half out of true before you shook free. Now two fingers buzz and drag numb, and the burn circles the wrist like a brand meant for a fence post. The doctor salves the ring, straps the wrist stiff, and taps each fingertip asking which ones you feel.
- Right wrist strapped stiff: no roping, hammering, or heavy lifting with that arm for 9 days
- Two numb fingers: fine work such as loading cartridges or tying knots is clumsy at best
- Salve and a fresh wrap on the burn ring every evening
- /me rubs the strapped wrist and pinches at two fingertips that do not rightly answer
Recovery The burn heals in two weeks; the feeling in the fingers comes back slower, weeks more, and mostly.·Doctor required

Stripped to the Quick
SeriousThe rope took the whole face of your palm off in one pull, neat as skinning a rabbit: a stripe of hide the width of the lariat gone from heel to fingers. It is bloody, filthy with hemp fibers and corral dust, and it hurts the way only a burn that deep knows how. The doctor tweezes rope strands out of the raw flesh by lamplight, floods it with carbolic until you find religion, and binds the hand open around a rolled bandage so it cannot close on itself.
- Right hand bound open around a bandage roll: no closing that fist for 7 days
- No reins, no rope, no pistol in the right hand: learn the left or stay in camp
- Wrap changed daily, and the wound kept out of dishwater, dust, and horse sweat
- /me carries the right hand palm-up like an offering, fingers curled loose over the wrapping
Recovery Ten days to skin over, three weeks to trust it. The new skin comes in pink and thin as paper.·Doctor required
6
Two Fingers Roped
SeriousThe loop's tail whipped a half hitch around your first two fingers and the steer did the rest. It burned both to the quick and yanked the forefinger clean out of its socket at the middle knuckle before the wrap spun free. The doctor pulls it straight while you study the ceiling, splints the pair together in a leather stall, and dresses the burns with salve and a wrap tight enough to make you sigh.
- First two fingers of the right hand splinted together for 8 days: no trigger work, no roping
- Gripping anything wider than a coffee cup is out for a week
- /me raps the leather-splinted fingers idly on the table, then thinks better of it
Recovery The knuckle sets firm in a week or so; the burns skin over in two. The finger stays thick at the joint.·Doctor required
7
Split the Web
SeriousThe rope sawed into the web between thumb and forefinger and kept going, splitting the fork of your hand near an inch deep before the dally cleared. It bled like a stuck hog and it gapes every time the thumb moves. The doctor draws it closed with silk sutures, one careful stitch at a time, then binds the thumb to lie still against the palm so the mending is not torn out by ordinary living.
- Right thumb bound flat to the palm for 6 days: no gripping anything wider than a hammer handle
- Sutures out in a week if the wound stays quiet, so keep the hand dry and out of the dirt
- /me presses the bound thumb-fork gently with the other hand, checking the stitches held
Recovery Stitches out in seven days. The fork of the hand stays tight and tender for a month after.·Doctor required
8
Cracked Against the Horn
SeriousWhen the dally slipped, the rope slapped your hand flat against the saddle horn with the steer's whole argument behind it. The burn across the knuckles is the pretty part. Underneath, one of the long bones of the hand cracked, and the back of your hand is rising like a loaf of bruised bread. The doctor lays a padded splint from fingers to wrist and allows the bone will knit fine if you can go two weeks without punching anything.
- Right hand splinted flat from knuckles to wrist for 12 days: no fist, no rope, no pistol grip
- Reins in the left hand only, and slow work at that
- /me rests the splinted hand on the pommel, drumming nothing with fingers that cannot
Recovery The bone knits in three to four weeks. The knuckle burn heals first and itches worst.·Doctor required
9
The Raw Stripe
ModerateThe rope ran maybe a foot through your grip before you got clear, and it left its signature: a raw red stripe straight across the palm, skinned and stinging, beaded with blood along the deep middle. It is ugly and it is honest, and every hand in the outfit has one like it or worse. Salve, a clean wrap, and a few days of favoring it will see it right.
- No gripping with the right hand for 5 days: reins, ropes, and hammers go to the left
- Wrap changed morning and night with salve underneath, and no dishwater on it
- /me flexes the wrapped right hand open and shut slow, wincing at the stripe underneath
Recovery Skinned over in five or six days, tender for ten.·Doctor advised
10
Four Fingers Branded
ModerateYou tried to hold the run with your fingers and the rope branded all four across their inner faces, a matched set of raw stripes at the first joints. Not deep, but every bend of the hand cracks the burns open fresh and reminds you who won. The doctor salves each finger and wraps them one by one until your hand looks fit for a pharaoh's tomb.
- Four fingers of the right hand wrapped separately for 5 days: no reins and no fine work in that hand
- Anything hot, salty, or made of rope stays out of the right hand for a week
- /me waggles four mummy-wrapped fingers at anyone who asks how the roping went
Recovery A week for the burns to skin over, a few days more for the stiffness to walk off.·Doctor advised
11
Burned and Wrenched
ModerateThe rope scorched a stripe across the heel of your palm and then, because the steer was not finished, the last of the pull wrenched your roping shoulder half a turn past what shoulders agree to. The palm is salved and wrapped easy enough. It is the shoulder that will speak up every time you reach past your hat brim for a week or better.
- No overhead reach and no throwing a loop with the right arm for 7 days
- Right palm wrapped: light grip only, nothing heavier than a coffee pot for 4 days
- /me rolls the right shoulder in a careful circle and stops well short of finishing it
Recovery The palm heals inside a week; the shoulder takes two before a loop feels honest again.·Doctor advised
12
A Long Red Road
ModerateThe rope skipped as it ran and laid its mark from the middle of your palm clear up the inside of the forearm, a long shallow burn like a road drawn on a map. None of it is deep, all of it is angry, and your shirtsleeve will glue itself to it by morning unless it is dressed proper. Salve, a loose wrap from wrist to elbow, and time.
- Right forearm wrapped wrist to elbow for 5 days: keep the sleeve loose and the dirt out
- No rope handling with the right hand for 4 days while the palm end closes
- /me peels the shirt cuff carefully away from the wrapped forearm
Recovery A week to close, ten days for the sting to leave. The mark fades to a pale line by winter.·Doctor advised
13
Blistered Deep
ModerateYou checked the run just quick enough. The rope left heat instead of ruin: a row of blisters across the palm, and one at the base of the fingers gone deep, fat and cloudy as a boiled egg. The doctor drains the big one with a clean needle, leaves its roof on for a bandage nature made, and paints the row with salve before wrapping the hand smooth.
- Right palm wrapped for 4 days: no bare-handed rope work and no handling hot iron
- The drained blister stays covered: if the wrap goes gray or the palm streaks red, see the doctor
- /me presses a thumb lightly along the wrapped palm, counting the blisters through the linen
Recovery Four or five days to settle, a week until the new skin under the blisters will bear a rope.·Doctor advised

A Hot Stripe
MinorThe rope got half a pull on you before you turned it loose, and it left a hot red stripe across the palm: skin whole but shouting. It looks like nothing and feels like a stove lid. A cool wet cloth this evening, a dab of salve, and by tomorrow it is mostly your pride doing the complaining.
- Light grip only with the right hand today and tomorrow: the rope stays coiled
- /me blows across a red-striped palm between chores
Recovery Two or three days and the stripe fades to a story.·No doctor needed
15
Pinched in the Coil
MinorThe rope did not burn you, it bit you. The last coil closed on two fingers like a preacher's handshake and pinched them purple before the slack came. Nothing broken: the doctor bends each one to be sure, allows they will bruise handsome, and offers a pull of whiskey that is mostly for him.
- Two bruised fingers on the right hand: no roping or trigger work for 3 days
- /me flexes two plum-colored fingers and finds they all still vote
Recovery The bruises bloom for two days and fade inside a week.·No doctor needed
16
The Cuff Line
MinorThe glove held where it covered, and the rope found the one inch it did not: a thin raw line at the wrist where the cuff ends, neat as a tailor's chalk mark. It weeps a little and rubs against your shirtsleeve, and that is the whole of the damage. Salve and a strip of linen and you are back at the branding fire by supper.
- A wrapped line on the right wrist: keep the shirt cuff buttoned loose over it for 3 days
- /me tugs the shirt cuff clear of a thin wrapped line at the wrist
Recovery Healed over in three or four days.·No doctor needed
17
Singed Pride
MinorYou felt the heat of it clear through the callus, a friction sting across the palm that never broke the skin. By firelight there is only a shiny pink track and a fresh opinion about dallying careless. You wrap it out of caution, and because a bandage makes the story better than the wound does.
- Right palm tender for 2 days: swap the heavy rope work to the left hand when you can
- /me shows off a shiny pink track across the palm to anyone slow enough to be caught
Recovery A day or two of tenderness, no more.·No doctor needed
18
The Glove Gave Its Life
LuckyThe rope ran full speed with the steer's full weight behind it, and every inch of that fury went into the leather. Your glove smoked, split down the palm seam, and peeled off your hand in two pieces like a shed skin. Underneath, your palm is warm and printed with the weave of the rope, and not one layer of you is missing. The glove gets a decent burial. You get a drink.
- One glove down: bare-handed or borrowing until you reach a dry goods counter
- /me holds up the split, smoking remains of a glove by two fingers, in silent eulogy
Recovery You are healed by morning; the glove is not.·No doctor needed
19
Slack at the Last
LuckyThe steer cut back the instant the dally slipped, and the whole rope went slack in the same heartbeat it should have gutted your hand. The line slid across your palm gentle as a handshake and dropped in the dirt. You stood there holding nothing, heart going like a stampede, hand without so much as a pink mark worth pointing at.
- No injury, but your heart knows what nearly happened: hold the steer no grudge and pour yourself a coffee
- /me looks from the unmarked palm to the loose rope in the dirt and back again
Recovery Nothing to recover but your composure, and that by sundown.·No doctor needed
20
The Fastest Dally Ever Thrown
MiraculousThe dally slipped and the rope began to run, and something older than thought took your hand. You flipped a fresh wrap over the horn in the space between two heartbeats, the coil bit down on itself, and twelve hundred pounds of steer hit the end and sat down in the dust like a Sunday penitent. The rope's tail kissed your palm on its way past and left one thin white line, the skin not even broken. Three riders saw it happen. By Saturday the story will have you doing it blindfolded, and you will not correct them.
- Not a mark on you that lasts past supper
- The outfit owes you a drink and you know it: collect within the week
- /me re-coils the rope with slow ceremony, one thin white line across the palm, saying nothing
Recovery Nothing to heal. The story, however, grows for years.·No doctor needed
