Hanging Survived

Every noose that didn't finish the job, check your server's rules before anyone swings.

A d20 injury roll table for RedM roleplay. Roll low and it goes badly; roll a 20 and walk away with a story. Each entry gives you the injury, the roleplay effects to act out, and how long recovery takes with or without a doctor.

The Throat Remembers

Catastrophic

The rope crushed more than it burned, and by midnight your breathing was a whistle through a pinhole. The doctor opened your windpipe with a blade to keep you alive, and what the noose and the knife leave behind, the gravel voice, the slow arm, the scar at your throat, is yours for keeps.

  • Bedridden 7 days, breathing through the doctor's handiwork
  • Voice reduced to a permanent low gravel, whispering is easier than talking
  • One arm weak and slow to answer, perhaps for good
  • /me touches the dressing at the hollow of their throat before speaking

Recovery Weeks in a doctor's care; the scar at your throat and the voice are permanent company.·Doctor, urgently

2

Swelling in the Dark

Severe

You walked away from the rope, which is the trap of it, the crushed cartilage in your throat swells through the evening, and by the small hours you are fighting for air like a landed fish. The doctor sits up all night with cold compresses and a scalpel he hopes not to use.

  • Watched around the clock for 2 days, the airway can close hours after you feel fine
  • Whisper only for 4 days; every swallow is a negotiation
  • Broth and water only for 3 days
  • /me breathes in a thin, careful whistle, chin lifted

Recovery A week under a doctor's eye while the swelling stands down; alone, some folk stop breathing in their sleep.·Doctor, urgently

3

Cracked at the Neck

Severe

The drop cracked bones in your neck without touching the cord inside them, which the doctor calls the nearest thing to grace he has seen. He builds you a brace of plaster and leather and forbids you your own head's weight.

  • Rigid neck brace, you turn your whole body to look at anything, for the next 7 days
  • No riding faster than a walk for 7 days; one stumble could finish the rope's work
  • Sleeps propped upright, brace on, for 7 days
  • /me pivots stiffly from the hips to face whoever is speaking

Recovery 6 to 8 weeks braced, with a doctor checking often; careless movement gambles everything.·Doctor, urgently

4

The Broken Hinge

Severe

The small bone above your voice box snapped under the rope, and now swallowing is a labor you plan in advance. You choke on crumbs, on water taken too fast, on your own spit if you talk while eating.

  • Choking fits at meals, eats alone or with patient company for 5 days
  • Soft food in small spoonfuls only for 5 days
  • Voice cracked and painful; keep to short sentences for 4 days

Recovery 2 weeks of careful eating with a doctor's watch; a bad choking fit alone is genuinely dangerous.·Doctor, urgently

5

Red-Eyed and Furrowed

Serious

The mob had you swinging on your toes before the rescue broke through. You blacked out with the rope singing, and you wake with a deep ligature furrow around your throat and both eyes speckled red where the small vessels burst.

  • Deep rope furrow around the neck, dressed and visible for 5 days
  • Eyes speckled blood-red for 4 days, strangers stare, children point
  • Voice a torn rasp for 3 days
  • /me meets a stare with speckled red eyes and doesn't blink first

Recovery A week for the furrow to scab and the eyes to clear; the memory of the rope singing takes longer.·Doctor required

6

Bruised Pipes

Serious

The rope bruised your throat deep without breaking anything, which the doctor calls luck and you call small comfort. Swallowing feels like forcing a fist down a stovepipe, and your voice arrives crushed flat.

  • Broth and soft food only for 3 days
  • Speaks in a flat, crushed voice for 4 days, singing is out of the question
  • Wears the bruise as a purple-black collar for 6 days

Recovery 5 days of rest and cool cloths; the doctor should look in daily in case the swelling has plans.·Doctor required

7

The Missing Minute

Serious

You remember the rope going taut and then nothing until the ground. Somewhere in the missing minute your neck was wrenched hard sideways, and now dizzy spells arrive unannounced, tilting the floor twenty degrees.

  • Dizzy spells for 3 days, no ladders, rooftops, or riding at speed
  • Neck wrenched stiff; turns the whole body to look behind for 4 days
  • A gap in memory around the hanging that never fills in

Recovery 4 days for the spells to fade with rest; a week if you keep testing your balance.·Doctor required

8

The Weeping Collar

Serious

The rope burned a deep ring right around your throat, and it weeps through every dressing by suppertime. A bandana over the bandage keeps the flies and the questions off, mostly.

  • Rope-burn collar dressed daily for 5 days, weeps and sticks to cloth
  • High collar or bandana worn constantly; the mark beneath is livid
  • Turning the head pulls the burn, moves like a nervous owl for 3 days
  • /me tugs the bandana up over the dressing without thinking

Recovery A week of daily dressings to heal clean; the collar mark shows faint for 2 weeks after.·Doctor required

9

High Collar Season

Moderate

A raw rope line rings your throat and your voice has dropped into a saloon-singer rasp. Between the mark and the croak, everyone you meet already knows the shape of the story, the details are yours to sell.

  • Visible rope mark at the collar line for 5 days, high collars and bandanas become your fashion
  • Hoarse rasp for 3 days; long speeches cost you
  • /me adjusts a high collar that doesn't quite hide the mark

Recovery 5 days for the voice; the mark fades over 2 weeks.·Doctor advised

10

Stiff-Necked

Moderate

The jerk of the rope wrenched every muscle in your neck, and they have all resigned in protest. Checking over your shoulder means turning your horse, your body, and your whole day around.

  • Turns the entire body to look sideways for 3 days
  • No shoulder-checking at a gallop, riding fast is a straight-line affair for 3 days
  • Winces at every nod; agrees verbally instead

Recovery 3 days of hot cloths and liniment; 5 if you keep arguing with it.·Doctor advised

11

Bloodshot Testimony

Moderate

The pressure burst the small vessels in both eyes, and they have gone speckled red like a boiled map. There is no pain in it, but mirrors startle you, and strangers keep buying you drinks just to hear the reason.

  • Blood-speckled eyes for 4 days, deeply unsettling to strangers
  • Faint pressure headaches by evening for 2 days
  • /me stares back, red-speckled and unbothered, until the other fellow looks away

Recovery The red clears through 5 days, fading from alarming to merely interesting.·Doctor advised

12

The Trapdoor Creak

Moderate

They dropped you a foot on a rope rigged to nothing, a mock execution, and your body came through with barely a mark. What swings from the rafters now is the sound: every creaking board and cellar hinge is that trapdoor again.

  • Flinches hard at creaking wood and sudden drops for 5 days
  • Will not stand on gallows, scaffolds, or trapdoors of any kind
  • Sleeps badly; wakes at night with a hand at their throat
  • /me goes rigid at the creak of a floorboard, hand rising to their neck

Recovery The body needs a day; the trapdoor takes longer to leave, and kind company hurries it.·Doctor advised

13

Two-Day Whisper

Moderate

Your throat swelled just enough to steal the volume from your voice. Everything works, but for a couple of days you speak in a whisper that turns every conversation into a conspiracy.

  • Whisper only for 2 days, folk lean in, assuming secrets
  • Throat aches by evening; honey and quiet help
  • A faint rope mark peeking above the collar for 3 days

Recovery 2 days of rest, honey, and not shouting at anybody.·Doctor advised

14

The Red Necklace

Minor

Cut down fast enough that the rope only signed its name, a friction line around your throat and an ache when you swallow hard. A high collar hides it entirely, which is somehow a disappointment.

  • Faint rope line at the throat for 3 days
  • Swallowing big bites reminds you it happened for 1 day

Recovery 3 days and the line fades to nothing.·No doctor needed

15

Through the Floor

Minor

The trapdoor banged, the rope snapped, and you arrived in the dirt under the scaffold before the crowd finished gasping. You climb out with a bruised tailbone, a rope-scuffed jaw, and hands that won't stop shaking.

  • Bruised tailbone, sits sideways and stands in stages for 3 days
  • Rope scuff along the jaw, visible for 2 days
  • Hands tremble at odd moments for 2 days
  • /me lowers onto the bench one careful hip at a time

Recovery 3 days for the bruise; the shaking hands settle sooner with whiskey and company.·No doctor needed

16

Seconds on the Rope

Minor

Friends cut you down almost before the rope drew taut. You have a scraped throat and an hour of croaking, and after that, mostly a powerful new opinion about rope.

  • Croaky voice for the rest of the day
  • Faint red line, gone in a day
  • Startles at the sight of a coiled lasso for 2 days

Recovery A day, and most of that is nerves.·No doctor needed

17

Knotted Wrong

Minor

Whoever tied the knot put it under your jaw instead of behind your ear, and the rope shoved your head sideways instead of biting your throat. You come away with a bruised jaw, ringing ears, and a crick, hanged, technically, and barely worse for it.

  • Bruised jaw, chews on one side for 2 days
  • Ears ring softly for 1 day
  • /me works their jaw side to side, testing the hinge

Recovery 2 days; the ringing quits first.·No doctor needed

18

Toes Found the Earth

Lucky

The rope stretched, the branch bowed, and your boot-tips found the ground just enough to steal the noose's arithmetic. You stood on tiptoe through the longest minutes of your life until rescue arrived, throat scraped but whole.

  • Scraped throat and calves that ache from standing on tiptoe, for 1 day
  • A profound new respect for green wood and cheap rope

Recovery A day; the calves complain longest.·No doctor needed

19

Cut Down Clean

Lucky

A knife was through the rope before your full weight ever settled into it. You dropped into friendly arms with a red line on your neck and your heart going like a stampede, and that was the whole of the damage.

  • Thin red line at the throat, faded within a day
  • Owes somebody a very good bottle
  • /me rubs their neck absently, still feeling a rope that isn't there

Recovery Nothing but nerves and a debt of gratitude.·No doctor needed

20

The Rope Refused

Miraculous

The trapdoor dropped, the crowd drew breath, and the rope snapped like a fiddle string, setting you down in the dirt below on both feet, alive and unmarked. Half the town took it for the hand of God, the hangman crossed himself and quit by sundown, and the broken noose hangs on your wall to prove every word.

  • Unmarked, landed standing, which no witness will ever stop describing
  • The broken noose is yours; folk pay to touch it for luck
  • Some in town quietly believe you cannot be hanged, and you do not correct them
  • /me lifts the snapped noose from around their neck and holds it up to the crowd

Recovery None, Providence did the doctoring.·No doctor needed
