D20RP

Choked, Hooded & Strung Up

Rope, hands, or the grain sack, air always costs, and the roll names the price.

A d20 injury roll table for RedM roleplay. Roll low and it goes badly; roll a 20 and walk away with a story. Each entry gives you the injury, the roleplay effects to act out, and how long recovery takes with or without a doctor.

1

The Throat Closes Late

Catastrophic

The choking stopped hours ago; the danger didn't. The bruised pipes of your throat swell on through the evening, each breath narrower than the last, until you're sipping air through a straw's worth of windpipe in the small hours. Without a doctor tonight, the swelling finishes what the hands began.

  • Worsening breathlessness 2-8 hours after, it strikes wherever you are
  • Cannot speak above a whisper; swallowing is a project
  • /me sits bolt upright, hands at their throat, dragging thin whistling breaths

Recovery A doctor's steam, poultices, and overnight watch pull you through, then 5-7 days of whisper and rest; alone, the airway may close entirely.·Doctor, urgently

2

Shoulder from the Socket

Severe

Strung up by the wrists from a rafter with your boots brushing the floor, your own weight did the torturer's work, one shoulder ground out of its socket an inch at a time. Someone set it back with a lurch you heard through your teeth, and the arm now hangs in a sling like a guilty thing.

  • Arm slung tight to the chest; no use of it for 7 days
  • Cannot raise the arm above shoulder height for 7 days even unslung
  • /me eases their slung arm against their ribs, turning their whole body to look sideways

Recovery 3-4 weeks slung with a doctor's care; unslung, it slips its socket again on the first hard pull.·Doctor required

3

Crushed Voice

Severe

The hands went deep and stayed, and your voice box paid the toll. What comes out now is a ruined scrape of sound, and swallowing feels like forcing a stone down a bruised pipe. Solid food is off the table, literally, and a doctor should hear that breathing before nightfall.

  • Voice a painful rasp: whispers only for 5 days
  • Broth, soup, and soft bread soaked in milk for 4 days
  • A collar of finger-bruises that no neckerchief fully hides

Recovery The voice climbs back over 2-3 weeks with rest and silence; strained early, the rasp can settle in for months.·Doctor required

4

Dead Man's Hands

Severe

A night hung from your wrists pinched the nerves where they cross the shoulder, and now both hands have gone half-foreign, numb at the fingertips, tingling like sleet, dropping whatever they're not watching. For a shootist, it's the cruelest wound in this whole room.

  • Numb, tingling fingers: no trustworthy gun work for 7 days
  • Dropping small objects without warning, coins, cards, matches
  • /me flexes their fingers over and over, frowning at them like strangers

Recovery Feeling returns over 2-6 weeks as the nerves wake; a doctor confirms nothing is torn, and the wait is the only cure.·Doctor required

5

Blacked Out

Serious

The arm across your throat took you all the way down into the dark, and you came back on the floor with a gap where the last few minutes should be. What did you tell them in the doorway of consciousness? You genuinely do not know, and the not-knowing is its own slow poison.

  • A missing stretch of memory, you may have said anything
  • A raspy whisper of a voice for 4 days
  • Headache and washes of dizziness for 2 days

Recovery Voice and head right themselves in 4-6 days; the gap in the evening never fills in.·Doctor required

6

Rope-Burned Raw

Serious

You fought the wrist ropes for hours, and the hemp won the way hemp does, grinding through skin in weeping red bracelets. Both wrists are flayed raw and stick to everything, and every button, rein, and pistol grip runs through those wrists first.

  • Wrists bandaged; gripping and twisting sting sharply for 4 days
  • Weeping abrasions that must be dressed daily or they scab to the bandage
  • Rope-scar bracelets that mark you as someone who was held, for weeks

Recovery 10-14 days to skin over kept clean; fouled, they fester and scar wide.·Doctor required

7

Fingertip Necklace

Serious

Ten distinct fingertip bruises ring your throat like a string of dark pearls, and beneath them the muscles are strained and the pipes are tender. Talking works, quietly. Swallowing works, slowly. High collars have become your entire fashion.

  • Visible throat bruising for 1-2 weeks, high collar, neckerchief, or questions
  • Hoarse and quiet-spoken for 3 days
  • Tender swallowing: meals go slow for 2 days

Recovery Bruises fade over 2 weeks; the voice steadies in 3-4 days.·Doctor required

8

Rafter Shoulders

Serious

Hours hanging from the beam stretched both shoulders to the edge of wrong without pushing them over. The joints stayed home; every muscle and cord around them filed a grievance. Your arms hang like borrowed things, and lifting them past your ribs is a negotiation.

  • Cannot raise arms above shoulder height for 4 days
  • No lifting, hauling, or haymakers for 3 days
  • /me rolls one shoulder, then thinks better of trying the other

Recovery Eases over 10 days with liniment and rest; rushed, a shoulder gives out mid-lift.·Doctor required

9

A Ring of Bruises

Moderate

The rope left its signature, a clean bruised line clear around the neck, dark as a hat band. It doesn't hurt much past the second day. It just tells everyone who sees it exactly what was done to you, until it fades or you learn to love high collars.

  • A ligature bruise ring visible for 1-2 weeks
  • Neckerchief worn high; you adjust it whenever eyes linger
  • /me tugs their collar up as heads turn

Recovery Fades through purple to yellow over 10-14 days; nothing else to mend.·Doctor advised

10

Whisper Week

Moderate

Your voice took the worst of it and left the rest of you nearly untouched. Everything you say for days comes out as a torn whisper, and the whole saloon leans in every time you order, a hush you can either resent or learn to command.

  • Whisper-only voice for 4 days, shouting is simply gone
  • A cough like tearing burlap when you try to raise it

Recovery Voice returns by degrees over 5-7 days; honey, whiskey, and silence are the whole prescription.·Doctor advised

11

The Sack Stays With You

Moderate

The grain sack over your head left no mark at all, and it left the deepest one. Hours of burlap dark, breathing your own used air, voices circling, the body forgot it within a day; the animal underneath has not. Closed rooms and covered faces are different places now.

  • Cannot bear anything over your face for 5 days, bandannas ride at the neck
  • Sleeping with a lamp lit, or not much at all, for 4 days
  • A startle at burlap, feed sacks, and pillowcases you're not proud of

Recovery Sleep smooths out inside a couple weeks; telling someone about the sack helps more than pretending it was nothing.·Doctor advised

12

Pins and Needles

Moderate

The wrist ropes pinched something on the way to your hands, and they've been buzzing with sleet ever since, functional but sloppy, tingling from the little finger down. Cards get fumbled, matches take two strikes, and your draw is a beat behind its own reputation.

  • Tingling, imprecise hands for 3 days, fine work is fumbled
  • Shaking your hands out constantly, like flicking off water

Recovery The buzz recedes over 4-6 days as the nerve settles.·Doctor advised

13

Raw Wrists

Moderate

The ropes were tight, the night was long, and your wrists show the whole ledger, chafed red bands that sting under cuffs and catch on everything. Not deep, not dangerous, just constant, like the memory.

  • Chafed wrist bands under bandages for 3 days
  • Shirt cuffs and gloves aggravate them all day

Recovery Skinned over in 5-7 days with salve; faint marks a while longer.·Doctor advised

14

Croaky

Minor

A brief, businesslike choke, enough to make the point, not enough to leave much behind it. Your voice comes out a half-tone low and gravel-edged through tomorrow, which some folks will find distinguished.

  • A low gravel voice for 2 days
  • One faint thumb-bruise below the jaw

Recovery Clear-voiced again in 2-3 days.·No doctor needed

15

Red Collar

Minor

The rope was more prop than weapon, snugged and held while the questions did the real squeezing. A band of chafed red circles your neck like a sunburn from a tight collar, and it fades about as fast.

  • A red chafe line at the collar for 2-3 days
  • Buttoning the top button smarts for 2 days

Recovery Gone in 3 days; no one who didn't see it will ever know.·No doctor needed

16

Stiff Neck

Minor

You spent the whole ordeal braced against hands and rope, and the bracing is what you kept, every muscle from ear to shoulder set like mortar. For a couple of days you turn your whole body to look at things, like an owl in reverse.

  • A stiff neck for 2 days, you pivot at the hips to look behind you
  • One-handed neck rubs through every conversation
  • /me turns their whole torso to glance back, wincing

Recovery Loosens in 2-3 days; a hot rag at night hurries it.·No doctor needed

17

Short of Air, Long on Fear

Minor

They never pressed hard enough to mark you, just enough, and long enough, to teach your body the exact shape of running out of air. You're unharmed by every measure a doctor owns, and you've been taking slow deliberate breaths all day like a man counting money.

  • Catching yourself taking deep testing breaths for 2 days
  • A dislike of tight collars and top buttons this week

Recovery Nothing on the body to heal; the breathing habit fades within days.·No doctor needed

18

The Thick Bandanna

Lucky

Your heavy wool bandanna was still around your neck when the rope went on, and the fool never thought to pull it off. It ate the friction and half the pressure all evening, you're hoarse for an hour and hardly marked, and the bandanna has more than earned its keep.

  • An hour of hoarseness, gone by supper
  • A rope-scuffed bandanna promoted to lucky charm

Recovery Nothing to mend; wash the bandanna gently, it's a veteran now.·No doctor needed

19

Half-Hearted Hands

Lucky

Whoever drew the choking duty had no stomach for it, the grip was theater, the squeeze a suggestion. You wheezed on cue, they felt like professionals, and the faint fingerprints on your neck couldn't convict a man of a handshake by morning.

  • Faint marks gone by morning
  • A slightly theatrical cough you deployed at the time, now hard to retire

Recovery Fully yourself by sunrise.·No doctor needed

20

The Rafter Gives

Miraculous

They haul you up by the wrists for the long night's hang, and the old rafter cracks like spring ice, dropping you, the beam, and fifty years of barn dust all at once. You hit the boards in a crouch as the timber scatters your captors, and for one perfect moment you are the only one in the room still standing.

  • Scuffed wrists and a coat full of barn dust, nothing worse
  • A splinter of the old rafter kept in your hatband as a souvenir
  • /me taps the splinter of rafter wood tucked in their hatband

Recovery Nothing needed; the barn took the injury.·No doctor needed
